Seahawks Out, More NFL Playoff Talk, and College BBall

The Seattle Seahawks were finally eliminated from the playoffs on Sunday at Soldier Field in Chicago, falling to the Bears 35-24 in a game that wasn't even that close.Chicago blew the Seahawks away, finally removing the only losing team (7-9) in playoff history from a strange NFL playoffs that somehow includes mostly classic NFL franchises. The big boys are all represented--Pittsburgh with their multiple championships both in the 70's and in the new millennium, Chicago with their history of great players and multiple Super Bowl appearances including a Super Bowl 20 victory over New England, Green Bay with their storied history, and the New York Jets--being led by another "Broadway" quarterback, in 2nd year star Mark Sanchez out of USC. The Jets are the team with the longest drought of success. They have not even been to a Super Bowl since the infamous Ice Bowl with the Colts back in the 60's.
And yes, my Peyton Manning led Colts lost to the Jets in a rematch of last years AFC Championship game. This just wasn't the year for Indianapolis-one filled with too many injuries to count, among them the losses of Austin Collie, Bob Sanders, Joseph Addai, and Gary Brackett for most of the season. Indy's defense was weak enough without losing two of the top five players on the defense in Brackett and Sanders. As well as losing Manning's leading receiver in 2010 before he went out in #17 Collie. Let's just say I didn't shed many tears when the Colts were toppled by a last minute Sanchez led drive that ended in a short FG by Jets kicker Nick Folk to beat Indianapolis 17-16. All you Indianapolis haters can rest easy now that the best 4th quarter quarterback in the NFL is now sitting on the sidelines.
I think that this weekends matchups are good ones and will be filled with the competitive fire that brings out the best in NFL players. No matter how much money they make, when it comes down this far in the season these grown mens' pride is at stake. Don't get me wrong, it's still about the money, but if you want to see what the NFL really has to offer, watch the conference championships this weekend. They will get you stoked for the ending of what's been a strange and up and down year.
In college basketball this year has been up and down, with most of the preseason top 10 not doing as good as we all expected. Duke, Pitt, and Ohio State have all maintained their relativity so far and the likes of Syracuse, UCONN, Notre Dame and St. Johns have made waves in the Big East and nationally after disappointing seasons last year and in some cases for a few years now. Kemba Walker has been the biggest standout player this season by being 2nd in the nation in scoring at  25.5ppg. Leading the nation is BYU future pro Jimmer Fredette out of the streets of New York City. He barely tops Walker with 26.1 a game.
I watched the Villanova/Maryland game on Saturday and it was a battle! Jordan Williams, a Sophomore center for Maryland dominated the game on the offensive end for the Terrapins and did a great job rebounding. In the 2nd half however the Wildcats turned on the jets and upended Maryland with 17-0 run over 5 minutes that led to a 74-66 Villanova victory.
Other Notes....I was just talking about it on Saturday and doesn't Villanova remind you of a "villain" "cassanova"?? Therefore, "Villa" "nova"....just a thought.....some of these freshmen that come into NCAA ball are way overrated. Jared Sullinger of Ohio State isn't one of them. Last years Lance Stephenson debacle at Cincinnati perfectly depicts that situation....
